First Friday at Bell Arts; Ventura, CA

On the first Friday of each month, visual fine art spaces in downtown and midtown Ventura offer a variety of special entertainment to compliment the collectible artworks on display. Demonstrations, lectures, music, and performance provide an opportunity for everyone to share in this unique Ventura cultural experience. First Friday’s goal is to promote the appreciation of art in a relaxed, supportive and fun environment.

On Friday, June 7th, the Bell Arts Factory in Ventura, CA featured the artwork and talents of individuals on the autism spectrum. The Art of Autism exhibit was curated by Debra Hosseini and showcased artwork from over 25 artists on the autism spectrum. The evening included presentations from Brent & Linda Anderson, authors of “Unintentional Humor; Celebrating the Literal Mind”; Kelly Green, autism mom and founder of Autism Highway ;  Autistic cartoonist, Calvin Nye;  Film producer Keri Bowers and her son, artist, Taylor Cross; a vocal performance by Dylan Aragon; and a preview of the film “Generation A”, produced by Autism Movement Therapy visionary, Joanne Lara.

Please consider Brent’s “Literal Mind” when you use this saying….Cut a Rug cartoon

CUT A RUG: This is a slang expression for dancing. It originates from the idea that you may have to move rugs out of the way to dance or can describe someone who dances so much that they wear a hole in the rug.

Kappa Sisterhood

Our journey to write Unintentional Humor and create the Celebrate Autism foundation would not have been possible without the support and friendship of the incredible women of Kappa Kappa Gamma. In May, 2012 we visited the Struve family in Chicago, IL. Robin Ruyle Struve, is an attorney at Latham & Watkins, LLP who has generously donated their time and expertise (pro bono) to establish the Celebrate Autism 501(c)3 foundation.

As we travel the US attending autism events and selling Unintentional Humor books, we often connect with Kappas around the country. The unconditional support we receive from from KKG friends is a large part of our success. We look forward to meeting friends new and old in the upcoming months!

Thank you Kim for writing about Unintentional Humor and the literal mind of autism.  It is so important for people to understand the confusion that often occurs with our spoken language.  By sharing Brent’s stories and humorous examples of his literal mind, we hope to help everyone learn to communicate more effectively.
